Military Family Holiday Support program providing Thanksgiving meal kits to 63 active-duty military families at Fort Hood following the 2025 federal government shutdown.
Salute to Service
Thanksgiving can be an especially difficult season for military families, and in 2025 those challenges were compounded by the financial strain caused by the federal government shutdown. Missed or delayed paychecks, rising living costs, and unexpected expenses placed added pressure on households already navigating the realities of military life.
Frequent relocations, time away from loved ones, and limited local support networks often leave military families facing the holidays without the familiarity and connection many take for granted. As a Salute to Service initiative, this second-year program honors the sacrifices of active-duty service members by supporting the families who serve alongside them. Through practical, dignified assistance, the program reflects a commitment to stand behind those who sacrifice year-round—especially during moments of heightened need—while continuing a growing tradition of Thanksgiving support for military families.
About the Program
Through Thanksgiving 2025 – Salute to Service, GTC United provided 63 active-duty military families at Fort Hood with Thanksgiving support designed to ease financial burden while preserving the heart of the holiday.
Each Thanksgiving basket was thoughtfully assembled as a traditional Thanksgiving meal kit, giving families the ingredients needed to prepare and share a meaningful holiday meal together in their own homes. By removing stress around food access, this program allowed families to focus on what matters most — time, gratitude, and togetherness.
Program Highlights
- 63 Families Served: Active-duty military families at Fort Hood received complete Thanksgiving support
- Thanksgiving Meal Kit: Thoughtfully assembled baskets with all ingredients for a traditional Thanksgiving meal
- Preserving Tradition: Enabling families to prepare and share a meaningful holiday meal together
- Second Year: Continuing a growing tradition of Thanksgiving support for military families
The 2025 Federal Government Shutdown
The federal government shutdown in 2025 created significant financial hardship for military families nationwide. Missed or delayed paychecks, combined with layoffs among military spouses, closures of on-base childcare and support services, increased off-post childcare costs, delayed housing and food allowances, and insurance disruptions left many households struggling to meet basic needs. As a result, planning for Thanksgiving and the holiday season became increasingly difficult for families already navigating the demands of military life.
Why This Matters
Military families face unique challenges that are often amplified during the holidays:
- Frequent relocations that separate families from extended relatives and traditions
- Deployments and duty schedules that disrupt holiday plans
- Limited local support networks at new duty stations
- Financial constraints, particularly among junior enlisted service members
- The emotional weight of serving far from home during seasons meant for gathering
Honoring Service Through Action
This initiative reflects GTC United's continued commitment to honoring service through action and ensuring no military family feels forgotten during moments meant for connection and celebration. Every basket represents more than a meal — it is a message of gratitude, reminding families that their sacrifices are recognized and their community stands with them.
