Bringing Thanksgiving to Our Heroes
2024 marked the first year this initiative was formally dedicated to serving veteran and military families. Rooted in faith and service, this program was created in recognition that the holidays can be a particularly challenging season for military households.
Frequent relocations, time away from loved ones, and limited local support networks often leave families navigating the holidays without the familiarity and connection many take for granted. This initiative exists to meet those challenges with compassion, dignity, and practical support, establishing the foundation for an annual program.
What's Included in Each Basket
Each Thanksgiving basket is thoughtfully assembled as a cook-at-home meal kit, giving families the ingredients needed to prepare and share a meaningful holiday meal together. Baskets may include:
- Turkey or ham, based on family preference
- Traditional holiday sides such as stuffing, green beans, and sweet potatoes
- Cranberry sauce and gravy
- Fresh fruits and vegetables
- Dinner rolls
- Dessert options including pumpkin pie, pecan pie, apple pie, or chocolate pie
- Additional pantry staples to support the meal
Supporting Military Families
Our partnership with HQBN ensures that military families facing financial challenges receive priority support. Many of these families have a service member deployed or are adjusting to civilian life after years of service. This program allows them to focus on family togetherness rather than financial stress during the holidays.
Community Collaboration
This massive undertaking is only possible through the generosity of our community:
- Local Businesses: Donated turkeys, produce, and other supplies
- Volunteers: 9-10 volunteers helped assemble and distribute baskets
- Financial Donors: Contributions that allowed us to purchase additional supplies
- Distribution Partners: Churches and community centers that served as distribution points
The Impact
This first-round Thanksgiving Basket Giveaway supported 40+ active-duty military families, providing cook-at-home meal kits to help ease financial strain and create space for connection during the holiday season. The gratitude shared by these families reinforces the importance of offering intentional, dignified support to those who serve.
